In photography and cinematography, headroom or headroom is the concept of aesthetic composition that discusses the relative vertical position of the subject in the picture frame. The headroom refers specifically to the distance between the top of the subject's head and the top of the frame, but the term is sometimes used instead of the main room, the nasal space or the 'viewing space' to include the sense of space on both sides of the image.. The number of headrooms considered aesthetic is the dynamic quantity; it changes relative to how many frames are filled by the subject. For photography and cinematography, composition is essential. Instead of pointing and shooting, one has to arrange pictures to be fun. Too much space between the subject head and the top of the frame produces dead space. Not interesting and makes viewers feel awkward.

The concept of headroom was born with portrait painting techniques. The classical painter uses a technique related to the headroom called "rule of thirds". The "one-third rule" was first created by painter John Thomas Smith in his book "Remarks on Rural Scenery." The third rule indicates that the subject's eye, as the center of attention, is ideally positioned one-third from the bottom down from the top of the frame. With the subject placing a third from the bottom of the top of the frame, the subject is aligned with the proper headroom to create a picture that is pleasing to the eye. This technique has been done with other forms of visual art such as photography and cinematography.

The Psychology of Headroom
Perceptual psychological studies have been conducted with researchers using white dots placed in various positions within the frame to show that the observer attributes the potential motion to a static object within the frame, relative to its position. The immovable object is described as 'pulling' toward the center or toward the edge or angle. The right headroom is achieved when the object no longer appears to slip out of the frame - when the potential for movement looks neutral in all directions.
The headroom can also help the creator in forcing certain feelings on the audience. Headroom is a way of balancing the frame. According to Dr. John Suhler in his e-book Photography Psychology: Image and Soul , "the eye appreciates the appearance of balance in [image].That makes us feel centered, stable, and stable.This shows serenity and elegance." help create this balance. If there is too much headroom, this can make viewers feel uncomfortable. On the other hand, a partially cut head can make the viewer feel claustrophobic. A perfectly framed headroom can make viewers feel comfortable and focus on the subject's eyes. This allows the filmmaker to advance the story visually by changing the subconscious mind of the viewer. It can also help a photographer in creating the tone they want in a photo. For head shots, they want the viewer to really feel comfortable and interested in the person in the shot. They will frame it perfectly. For a work of art on mental illness, they may give too much attention to the audience or too little. It depends on the overall effect that a photographer wants.
Headroom in Cinematography
Cinematography has additional factors of the subject movement, camera movement, and possibly zoom in or out.
Change headroom when the camera zooms in or out, and the camera must simultaneously tilt up or down to keep the center of attention about a third from the bottom of the top of the frame. The closer the subject, the less head space required. In extreme close proximity, the top of the head is outside the frame, but the concept of headroom is still valid through one-third rule. It also changes when someone takes a snapshot of extreme extremes. Subjects can still be placed correctly for the third rule, but have a large amount of space between the head and the top of the frame. It can be more visually pleasing to give equal weight to the sky and the ground than to ensure proper headroom is being achieved.
Headroom on Television
In television camera work, the amount of headroom seen by the production crew is slightly larger than the number seen by home viewers, whose frames are reduced in about 5% of the area. To adjust it, the broadcast camera headroom is slightly expanded so that the home viewers will see the correct amount of headroom. Professional video camera watchers and professional video monitors often include overscan settings to compare between full screen resolution and "domestic cut-off" as an aid to achieve good headroom and headroom.
