Campus
Schools recognize smart students from financially challenged backgrounds that lead to the lack of funds available for development. However, schools have obtained additional funding from the government.
In June 2011, the school was hit by a storm that damaged the kitchen and dining room, knocking down power supplies for some time.
Kenya Airways offered to pay the full amount for 40 computers to set up two computer labs: one for all students and one special for the Aviation Technology program.
On May 16, 2011, the French Ambassador to Kenya, Etienne de Poncins and the Ministry of Education, launched the French Language Resource Center at Mang'u Middle School.
The school also leads in an effort to become green by using Biogas energy. Waste from the agencies is collected in three different digester tanks and then piped over 3 km to the gas chamber where the gas is collected. This is then used to power the generator used in the school.

In 1951, Mang'u Secondary School became the first African school in East Africa to have a complete science course in physics, chemistry, and biology.
Mang'u High School is ranked among the top national schools in Kenya Secondary Certificate of Education. In 1989 and 2007, Mang'u Secondary School was ranked first nationally in Kenya's Secondary Education Certificate and led the country in a national examination.
The school also hosts the Moi National Mathematics Contest, an exam prepared by teachers of Mang'u High School that brings together students from every secondary school in Kenya. The contest started in 1996 with 19 schools and increased to 74 schools in 1999. The number of participating students also increased from 278 to 1,200 in the same period. The National Mathematics contest has gained fame as a competitive and challenging mathematics exam that prepares students for Kenya Secondary Education Certificate. The school also hosts the Science Congress and the Aviation Symposium every year.
Reception
The school is highly selective, with only the best performing students in Kenya Basic Education Certificate being offered. After applying, students must submit a cover letter either from their local head, pastor or father in charge of their parish/mission and letter from their primary school principal. This is to ensure only disciplined students are recognized to maintain school standards.
There is controversy in the past where powerful politicians secure a place for their children even though they do not perform well. In 2001, the students went on strike to protest the forced transfer of Principal Paul Agali Otula after he refused to recognize the son of a government official. Schools recognize students from public and private schools in the quota system to ensure that top students from each region are accepted. The school implements an affirmative action policy to ensure students are marginalized from semi-arid areas that are difficult to afford opportunities.
