HKDSE â€

Hong Kong Secondary Education Diploma ( HKDSE ; Mandarin: ?????? ) is the academic qualification offered by Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA). Most of the candidates taking part in the exam took four "core subjects" (Chinese and English, mathematics and liberal studies) and two or three "elective subjects".

After the launch of the 3-3-4 education system, the HKDSE exam has been the only public test held in Hong Kong for secondary school graduates since 2012, in lieu of the former Hong Kong Certificate of Education (HKCEE) and Hong Kong Advanced Examination (HKALE) ), set under the previous 3-3-2-3 system (13 years).

Under the new examination framework, a number of subjects at HKCEE and HKALE have been combined to suit students' interests and abilities. Candidates are examined on the core (compulsory) subjects and on the choice of their choice. Most candidates are expected to take four core subjects and two or three options (see list below).

Each HKDSE subject consists of compulsory parts and elective or extended parts. The elective or extended part is the "module" of the student's choice, and concentrates on a particular topic or skill. The elective module is an integral component of the standard curriculum, while the expanded module is designed for students with special goals or have higher abilities that may desire additional knowledge and skills.

  • Sample Options Section: The elective section of the HKDSE English Curriculum takes 25% of the time of the lesson. The modules in the elective section are divided into two groups: Language Arts and Non-Language Arts , both of which study English in different contexts and media. During the examination, candidates may choose from writing higher level papers (Paper B2) or standard level one (Paper B1). Finishing B1 allows the candidate to reach a maximum value of 4 when writing B2 allows 5 **.
  • Extension Sample Section: HKCEE Mathematics, Supplementary Mathematics, Pure Mathematics HKALE, Applied Mathematics (except the Mechanical part of the subject, which has been canceled in HKDSE), and Mathematics and Statistics combined into a newly known subject such as, Math. Candidates who want to study Math to a higher level have the flexibility to choose whether they want to take one of the extended part modules: "M1" Calculus and Statistics or "M2" Algebra and Calculus . However, extended modules are regarded as half-subjects, though have a syllabus of the full subject, so they lose appeal to students, hence the declining number of students who choose them.

The written exams of Category A subjects are mostly conducted between early March and early May. Oral exams and some other subjects were done in the past. Category C subjects are being undertaken in June (as for France and Spain, they were probably taken in November before). Category B subjects have no oral examination.

Prior to the exam, candidates should have the opportunity to get to know the listeners and sample different levels and be able to use them as a destination for their studies. When the results are released, candidates can also have a clearer picture of their level of achievement. Thus, tertiary institutions and entrepreneurs also have more accurate and stronger information for recruitment or recruitment purposes.

Subject

HKDSE is divided into 3 different categories, including 24 upper secondary subjects, over 40 applied subjects and 6 other language subjects.

Category A: New Senior Secondary Subject

Category A subjects are traditional school subjects and their exams are managed by HKEAA. The core (compulsory) subjects and elective subjects are within the Category A criteria. Results from these subjects are widely accepted for university admissions.

For Mathematics, values for extended parts (Modules 1 and Module 2) are listed separately on certificates issued by HKEAA.

Core subject

  • Tionghoa (reading, writing, listening & integrated skills, oral speaking)
  • English (reading, writing, listening & integrated skills, oral speaking)
  • Maths
  • Liberal Studies

As for Mathematics, other than the compulsory part, the candidate may choose one of the following extended part modules:

  • Module 1 ("M1", Calculus and Statistics)
  • Module 2 ("M2", Algebra, and Calculus)

As for Liberal Studies, the 6 module features curriculum, including:

  • Personal Development and Interpersonal Relationships
  • Hong Kong Today
  • China Modern
  • Globalization
  • Public Health
  • Energy and Environment Technologies

However, except when in extreme cases, the passing score in the extended section can not be used to understand failure in compulsory parts for university admission (especially for UGC-funded programs).

Options

Category B: Applied Subject Subject

Subject Category B is offered by a particular provider, the assessment of this subject is managed by the same, and the results are subject to HKEAA adjustments. They are vocationally oriented subjects to meet the needs of employers.

The subject of Applied Learning may be used by a tertiary institute for admission purposes, which in this case is deemed equivalent to the achievement of Class 2 in the traditional choice subjects for subject status " Occurs" and Class 3 for " Occurred with Distinction ". However, a number of prestigious universities in Hong Kong do not treat Category B subjects with the same status that will be enjoyed by the people of choice for admission purposes.

The areas of study include:

Category C: Other Language Subjects

They can be used to substitute Mandarin for university admissions for students whose native language is not Chinese but may not be used to replace English. It can also be selected as an option for students who speak native Chinese, but do not have an alternative language requirement status. In some cases, instead of Category C subjects, graduating in Chinese IGCSE (or similar Chinese qualifications) is required to enter in some institutes for non-Chinese speaking students.

Category C subjects adopt the same paper as the US General Education Certificate and are provided and marked by the Cambridge International Examination.

It should also be noted that educational institutions and/or departments are not required to recognize the results of Category B and C subjects, although they may regard them as reference material.

School-based assessment

School-based assessments (SBAs) are implemented to reduce dependence on previous "one-time" oral public vetting, featuring projects and reports submitted during different periods in high school. Most subjects, including Chinese, English and Liberal Studies include SBA tasks. The weight is still applied and the mark will be counted to the HKDSE level.

Grading

For Category A subjects at HKDSE, candidate performance is categorized and released on a seven-level scale indicated on the examination certificate. Level 5 ** is the highest and the lowest level 1. Differences 5 ** and 5 * (read as five-star double and five star ) are given to the two best-performing candidate groups reaching level 5. Unclassified class (U ) are also granted for exceptional scenarios such as absenteeism, fraud, or attempts not to achieve level 1 standards.

Category A: New Senior Secondary Subject

According to UCAS expert reports, the academic achievement level of the HKDSE exam is comparable to the internationally recognized high-level exams, such as IB Diploma and UK A-Levels. UCAS Tariff points shown above, excluding core and mathematical extensions.

Category B: Applied Learning Subject

Category C: Subject of Other Languages

These subjects are judged by Cambridge International, with grades from "a" to "e" ("e" class being the lowest and "a" being the highest). Performance under the "e" value is not shown on the certificate given to the candidate.

Marking

In a criterion-referenced scoring system, experts in related subjects set assessment standards for each level. Subsequently, level and sample descriptions continue to be reviewed based on the syllabus objectives and collect statistical data, including test statistics and answer scripts. Assessments in systems referring to criteria reflect the level of achievement of candidates in a particular subject rather than a candidate's place than others.

HKDSE markers are mostly teachers in high school. They are assigned to different assessment centers to perform Onscreen Marking (OSM). The first exam paper is scanned into the database from the scanning centers, then distributed to the marker via a computer system.

Registration to a local university

HKDSE is designed for local students in Hong Kong so they can apply to local universities through an integrated system, the Open University Program Acceptance System (JUPAS). While IB Diploma and other international qualifications are more often taken by private, DSS or international school students. International examinations and thus schools using international curricula are becoming more popular in Hong Kong. Due to differences between local and international qualifications, there is considerable concern about the emergence of a bipartite education system, based on wealth, not achievement. However, students with international exam results simply can not register through JUPAS, which accounts for a higher admission rate for undergraduate courses in terms of total intake, and many DSS and private schools in Hong Kong do not maintain overpriced school fees or have programs very generous scholarships for those who can not afford to pay tuition.

Impact on school

One important impact on schools in Hong Kong is the halting of the need for the sixth form of college due to the cancellation of HKALE and 7 forms. However, some colleges like Vicwood KT Chong Sixth Form College, still operate as high school.

Criticism

Focus unbalanced

HKDSE is criticized for putting too much importance on the four core subjects, which make students ignore the chosen subjects. Tsui Lap-chee, who was president of the University of Hong Kong when the HKDSE system was introduced, said that the Education Bureau demanded that the university establish the so-called "3322" as a minimum entry requirement for university degree programs, at least 3rd grade in Chinese and English, and a minimum of level 2 in Mathematics and Liberal Studies. The university president thinks that this is not enough to study at the university, and proposes that there should be a minimum requirement for two elective subjects, but the Education Bureau does not accept it. He said that many students do not study the optional modules of Mathematics, thus lacking the advanced mathematical knowledge required for science and engineering, and it is difficult for them to redeem it after they enter university.

Login barrier

Since the HKDSE launch, Chinese papers are often dubbed "death paper" (Chinese: ????). High expectations are found because Chinese is the main language of the Hong Kong people, but about half of all candidates fail the subject each year, thus failing to enter university under entry requirements 3322. It is reported that the authors of the parts used in Chinese papers found that the questions on their part on the paper were difficult to answer. Elaine Yau from SCMP said that the exam results "prove [HKDSE] a major barrier to entry".
