Assassin's Creed
Desmond lives in New York and works as a bartender. To hide his identity, he lives under a pseudonym and uses only cash to protect himself. However, since his ancestors were a famous assassin, he was eventually tracked down by Abstergo Industries and captured by the Templars. Once inside the Abstergo facility, Desmond is forced into the Animus, a sophisticated technology that allows him to relive the memories of his ancestors stored in his DNA. This allowed him to separate Desmond's consciousness from his body and instill his thoughts to his ancestors. All under the supervision of Dr. Abstergo scientist. Warren Vidic and Dr. Lucy Stillman. Scientists explain that they are looking for Desmond's ancestral memories, especially from AltaÃÆ'r ibn-La'Ahad (1165-1257, Syria), for specific information, which they refuse to disclose. Without much choice, Desmond agrees to help them.
After recovering the information Vidic sought, the Abstergo executive told Desmond to be killed. Lucy's quick thinking rescued her; he persuaded Vidic to keep him alive until they knew he was useless. Upon returning to his room, Desmond, suffering from "Bleeding Effect", found side effects had given him AltaÃÆ'ïr's "Eagle Vision". This allows him to distinguish friends from enemies and to read secret messages written on walls and floors by Subject 16, another Animus subject that Lucy and Vidic sometimes mention.

Desmond escapes from Abstergo with the help of Lucy, who is an Assassin disguised in Abstergo. He enters Animus 2.0 , watched by Lucy and his team of killers Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane, to be trained as Assassin through Bleeding Effects. He revived the memories of Ezio Auditore da Firenze (1459-1524; Italy), his ancestors from the Renaissance. After successfully navigating Ezio's early memories, Desmond was extracted from the Animus to avoid the mental degradation that the 16 subjects suffered as a side effect of the Bleeding Effect and spent too long on the Animus. Shortly after extraction, Desmond blinks back to one of AltaÃÆ''s memories, though not related to the Animus. Desmond learns from his beloved AltaÃÆ'ïr, Maria Thorpe, a former Templar used as a decoy by Robert de Sablà © à ©. As AltaÃÆ'r leaves, Desmond wonders why he did not follow the Assassin; instead he moves toward Mary and enters his womb, indicating that the son of AltaÃÆ'r â ⬠"one of Desmond's ancestors - has just conceived.
After spending more time in Animus 2.0, Desmond began to adjust to his newly developed skills and became agile and expert in the use of weapons that Ezio learned to use. The last segment of Ezio's memories brings Ezio and Desmond dumbfounded into the futuristic space under the Sistine Chapel, where the hermrm goddess Minerva addresses Desmond by name and through Ezio warns him of the impending disaster with the potential to destroy all life on Earth. Desmond is pulled from the Animus when Abstergo finds their hiding place. Team escapes; Desmond uses skills acquired from the Bleeding Effect to repel the Abstuko forces. Desmond enters the Animus in transit, knowing Ezio and maybe Subject 16 may have the answer they are looking for.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Desmond, Lucy, Shaun and Rebecca arrive at Monteriggioni, where they set up a hiding house at Villa Auditore's refuge; Desmond goes back to Animus 2.0 to find the location of Apple of Eden, one of Ezio's "Piece of Eden". Through Ezio's memory, Desmond and the others learn that Apple is hidden under the Colosseum. The Assassins find their way in an ancient vault, where Apple is located. Desmond takes Apple and through it, Juno controls his body and forces him to stab Lucy, who is revealed to be a Templar double agent. Desmond fell into a coma, and was placed back into the Animus by William Miles and the other Assassin in an effort to preserve his consciousness.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
In the Animus, Desmond finds himself in the Black Room, the "safe mode" area for the device. In the "Animus Island" in the Black Room, he fills the digital construction of Subject 16, which explains that Desmond must find the memory that connects him with AltaÃÆ'ïr and Ezio so that he can reintegrate his subconscious that is destroyed and rises from his coma. While in this country, Desmond can hear conversations between his father, William "Bill" Miles, Shaun Hastings and Rebecca Crane. When Animus begins to remove the Animus Island, Subject 16 sacrifices itself to prevent Desmond's consciousness not to be erased, but not before transferring his own genetic memory to Desmond. After awakening from his coma, Desmond sees Shaun, Rebecca, and Bill around him. When William asks if he's okay, Desmond just declares that he knows what they should do.

According to main designer Steve Masters, Desmond's story ends in Assassins Creed III: "What we're trying to do is bring some finality to Desmond's story to really finish what you've opened and experienced with him. " The creative director of the series, Jean Guesdon, says that Desmond is an important character in the Assassin's Creed series, and will play a major role in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Despite his physical death, Desmond is still a strong asset to the Templars and Assassins. Shortly after Desmond's death, a sample recovery team from Abstergo was sent to collect his body and sample for the new Sample 17 . Desmond's DNA is stored on Abstergo Entertainment's servers, where a group of analysts are tasked with reviving copied genetic memories and learning about their ancestors. One of them, the character of the player, was in charge of reviving the memories of Edward Kenway, RatonhnhakÃÆ' à ©: tons and pirates, collecting enough data to lead Abstergo to the Observatory, the First Civilization temple that hosts advanced tracking devices and several bottles of blood samples of First Civilization. This allows Abstergo Entertainment to fund its operations by writing a movie about the Golden Age of Piracy.
Analysts steal and send back to the Assassins some of the recordings left by Desmond detailing his initial doubts about leaving the farm, his acceptance of the role he has chosen to play and his love for his parents. Because Abstergo can now collect anyone's genetic memory without having to use a blood-related analyst, Desmond's body gives Abstergo a full knowledge of his family's life.

In 2015, a boy was taken by his mother to the Abstergo clinic in New York City. Abstergo analysts found that the boy shared the same line of Desmond Miles patrilineal descent, suggesting that he might have been conceived by Desmond a few years after the last escape from the Assassin. On top of that, it was also revealed that the boy was a Sage, a modern reincarnation of the members of the First Civilizations. An Abstergo researcher then proposes to kidnap the boy and perform surgery on him. However, another researcher, Isabelle Ardant, opposed the idea, claiming that it would be better to kidnap the boy as he is older and place him in the Animus for 50 years so Abstergo can study his lineage.

Reception
Desmond Miles received mixed criticism from critics primarily because of his uneven characterization and development. She was voted the twentieth character of the 2000 decade by the Game Informer reader. The PlayStation Universe rated Desmond one of the PlayStation 3's worst characters, saying, "Despite being voiced admirably by North Nolan everywhere, it's impossible to get rid of pure monotonous feelings when stepping onto Desmond shoes when all you want to do is retreat into the then and stab people in the face ". Watchmojo puts Desmond in the 10th position of 10 Assassin's Creed Characters, which states 'Despite the cynics on the surface, Desmond's courage and concern for others shines, to say there is no willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good.' According to Voice Actor Nolan North, the initial plan for Desmond is that he will perform in six games each acquiring the skills of his Assassin ancestors and will eventually become 'The Ultimate Assassin' and will be able to travel time between the time periods; North became very interested in the concept, this idea has unfortunately been removed, adding to this, North personally noted Desmond as a 'boring' protagonist who ultimately has no direction to go forward, portraying the character as a 'fork in the road'.
He has been defined as MacGuffin: "he is there to move the story forward, but he gives a little substance". He represents symbolically a form of trascendence from the needs of the human body.
