Bachelor of Medicine, Degree of Surgery , or in Latin: Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae abbreviated in many ways, such as MBBS , MB ChB , MB BCh , MB BChir (Cantab) , BM BCh (Oxon) BMBS ), are the first two professional medical and surgical titles awarded after graduation from medical school by universities in countries that follow the British Royal tradition.. The nomenclature of the historical level indicates that they are two separate degrees; however, in practice, they are usually treated as one and shared, and may also be granted in postgraduate medical schools. In countries following the system in the United States, an equivalent medical degree is awarded as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO).

History and nature
Current degrees are awarded at institutions in Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Barbados, Botswana, China, Egypt, Fiji, Gambia, Ghana, Guyana, Hong Kong, India, Iraq, Ireland, Jamaica, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saudi Arabia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, Uganda, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Vanatu, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Historically, the Bachelor of Medicine is also a major medical degree awarded by institutions in the United States and Canada, such as University of Pennsylvania, Harvard, University of Toronto, University of Maryland, and Columbia. Some early North American medical schools (for the most part) were founded by doctors and surgeons who had been trained in England and Scotland. University medical education in the UK culminates with the qualifications of the Bachelor of Medicine and the Scotland the Doctor of Medicine. In the mid-19th century the public bodies governing medical practice required practitioners in Scotland and England to hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. Throughout the 19th century, the North American medical school switched to the tradition of an ancient university of Scotland and began negotiating with Doctor of Medicine rather than Bachelor of Medicine. The first institution to make changes is King's College (now Columbia University) in New York City.
In countries that provide a bachelor's degree in medicine, however, the Doctor of Medicine shows a holder of a higher doctoral degree and is reserved for medical practitioners who conduct research and submit a thesis in medicine. However, those who hold a Bachelor of Medicine degree, Bachelor of Surgery are usually referred to by the title "Doctor" and use the prefix "Dr.", whether they also have a PhD or DSC. Theoretically the right to use the title "Doctor" is awarded to a medical graduate when he is registered as a medical practitioner by a relevant professional body, not by possession of an MBBS degree. The reason is found in the parallel tradition for those who specialize in post-graduate Surgery; at the reception to the College of Surgeons, they stop organizing themselves "Doctor" and return to "Mister" (Mr), "Miss", "Muz" (Ms) or "Missus" (Ny). This strange situation, in which the increase in the professional rank is marked by dropping the Doctor's degree, arises because historically a "surgeon" is an ordinary worker, usually a barber, not trained in medicine but performing surgery and surgery under the direction of a doctor. renowned academic who is the actual "doctor".
Despite their style as two degrees, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery usually confer together. In some institutions, such as Oxford and Cambridge, it is possible to get a degree in a different year.
In many countries, degrees are awarded after five or six year undergraduate programs. For example, most Chinese universities offering doctor degrees provide a six-year degree program. In some cases, graduates in other disciplines may then enter a specialized postgraduate course, minus the duration to take into account the relevant material covered or the learning skills acquired during the first degree. In some cases, the first year courses (for a six-year degree) in elementary science physics, chemistry and biology have been removed: the standard must be reached by the school exam prior to admission. However, in most countries, newly graduated Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery must undergo a certain period of internship before they can obtain full registration as a licensed medical practitioner.
Recently, courses have been set up in Australian Commonwealth countries that provide MD degrees (see Australia).

Naming
The names and abbreviations given for this degree depend on the institution, the awarding body or country, and vary greatly. This is largely for reasons of tradition rather than showing the difference between the degree of degree relative. They are considered equal.
If the body grants degree degrees in Latin, the degree is usually named Medicinae Baccalaureus, Chirurgiae Baccalaureus ; Medicinae Baccalaureus et Chirurgiae Baccalaureus ; or Baccalaureus in Medicina et in Chirurgia ; abbreviated MB ChB, MB BCh or vice versa. If titled in English, they are named Bachelor of Medicine, Degree of Surgery ; Bachelor of Medicine and Degree of Surgery ; or Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery ; usually abbreviated to MB BS, and sometimes as BM BS, although most MB-awarding MB institutions do not use Latin to name their degrees.
Below are described the specific names used, governed by the state.
Australia
Historically, Australian medical schools have followed the British tradition of awarding Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees to their graduates while retaining their Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree for their research training, analogous to PhD, or for their honorary doctorate. Although most Australian MBBS degrees have been graduate programs since the 1990s, under the previous Australian Qualification Framework (AQF), they are still categorized as a Level 7 Degree along with other graduate programs.
The latest version of AQF includes a new category of Level 9 Master (Extended) degrees that allows the use of the term 'Doctor' in a relevant professional degree program degree style. As a result, some Australian medical schools have replaced their MBBS degree with MD to complete the previous anomaly nomenclature. With the introduction of the Masters degree, the university also renamed the previous doctorate of medical research. The University of Melbourne was the first to introduce the MD in 2011 as a basic medical degree, and has renamed its research degree to Doctor of Medicine (DMedSc).

However, in 2011, 49 universities (including top-ranking medical schools) have been authorized by the government to grant MBBS equivalent of BMed. In 2018, the MBBS degree is taught in English at 45 universities, with students having to pass the Chinese Language Level 4 Test at the end of the MBBS program. List 2014-15 not published by Ministry of Education. Universities listed in 2011 are:
Egypt
All Egyptian, public and private medical schools, award the MB BCh title as a basic medical degree after the completion of 6 academic years followed by mandatory clinical rotation for a full year.
In the near future, it has been decided to award a degree after completing 5 academic years and 2 full years of mandatory clinical rotation.
French
French students gain authorized access to medical studies when successful competitive exams take place at the end of the first year of their studies. They spend their second and third years in their medical school where they study physiology, semiology and the basics of medical examination. From their fourth year, they started their rotation in an educational hospital where they assisted junior and senior doctors and learned their art. At the end of their sixth year, they conducted a competitive examination to fit their medical specialties and practice city. They get a diploma called "DFASM Certificate" and enter the third and final clinical cycle of their studies. Students then become full-time doctors who practice under supervision and will be called "doctors" only when graduating at the end of their stay.
Ghana
All Ghanaian medical schools award MBChB as a basic medical degree after 6 academic years. This medical school is the University of Science and Technology Kwame Nkrumah, University of Ghana, University for Development Studies and University of Cape Coast.

India
Medical colleges in India, accredited by the Indian Medical Council, all degree degrees as MBBS . Medical colleges offer undergraduate degrees of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). Only institutions offering MBBS courses in their curriculum are called School of Medicine. Colleges can teach Post-Graduate and Paramedic program. Acceptance for government MBBS programs is highly competitive due to high subsidies and extensive hands-on experience.
The MBBS course begins with pre-and pre-clinical subjects such as biochemistry, physiology, anatomy, microbiology, pathology and pharmacology. Students are simultaneously trained directly in the ward and outpatient departments, where they interact with real patients for five years. The curriculum aims to embed standard protocols of historical taking, examination, differential diagnosis and complete patient management. Students are taught to determine what investigations will be useful to the patient and what best care options. The curriculum also contains a thorough practical knowledge and practice of performing standard clinical procedures. The course also contains an apprenticeship for 12 months, in which an intern is played in various specializations. In addition to standard clinical care, one also has a thorough experience of ward management, staff management, and comprehensive counseling skills.
The degree given is "Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery". The minimum requirement for the MBBS course is 50% in physics, chemistry, biology and English on the '10 2 'exam. For the category students booked, the requirement is 40%. MBBS acceptance is not centralized. Admission requirements vary across universities. Generally, students who achieve higher scores in the qualification exam and in the Medical Examination exam conducted by various institutions are accepted into the MBBS course. The government plans to come with a new medical college in 58 counties in India. The new college will add 5,800 more MBBS seats in the country.
Entrance tests are conducted by the following institutions:

ireland
Medical Schools in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland - Queen's University Belfast, Dublin University (Trinity College), several constituent institutions from the National University of Ireland (University College Dublin, University College Cork and National University of Ireland, Galway), and Royal College of Surgeons at Ireland - awarded the title MB BCh BAO . The letters BAO stood for Baccalaureus in Arte Obstetricia (Bachelor of Midwifery), a unique degree for Ireland that added Irish universities in the 19th century as a law at the time insist on a final examination in midwifery. This third title is an anachronism not registered with the Irish Medical Council (GMC). The only exception is a recent graduate of medical school graduated from Limerick University who awarded BM BS for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
At the University of Dublin, preclinical courses lead to an additional Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree (improved after three or four years for the Master of Arts); as initially after this most of the students used to go elsewhere to complete the clinical training.
LRCPI LRCSI , or just LRCP & amp; SI , indicating the holder of a licensed non-university history qualification awarded jointly by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland to RCSI medical school students under the Irish Konjoin Scheme . Unlike licensors granted by Royal Colleges in Scotland and England (which is an external qualification), this qualification is still acceptable by the Irish Medical Council, but not with GMC UK. Students at RCSI still receive this license but now also receive the BC BCO BAO degree, as the RCSI status as a recognized university of the National University of Ireland. RCSI students receive a Midwifery License (LM) from each college, in the same way that Irish universities award BAO, so their qualifications are sometimes expressed as L & amp; LM, RCPI, L & amp; LM, RCSI or more misleading as LLM, RCP & amp; SI.
LAH previously represents a license from the now-defunct Apothecaries Hall of Ireland, and is no longer given.

United Kingdom
England, Wales and Northern Ireland
While the first degree in medicine usually meets descriptor expectations for higher education qualifications at level 7 (British master's degree), this degree usually retains, for historical reasons, "Bachelor of Medicine, Degree of Surgery" and abbreviated to MBChB or MBBS.
Variable abbreviations are used for this degree in this area:
- MB ChB is used at Birmingham, Bristol, Buckingham, Lancaster, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Keele, Manchester, Sheffield and Warwick universities.
- MB BCh is used by Welsh universities, Cardiff University, and Swansea University.
- MB, BCh, BAO is used at Queen's University, Belfast.
- MB BS is used in all current medical schools or previously part of the University of London (aka The United Hospitals) (Imperial College School of Medicine, UCL Medical School, King's College London School of Medicine, Barts and London School of Medicine and St. George's, University of London), Norwich School of Medicine, Hull York Medical School, and University of Newcastle.
- BM BCh was awarded by the University of Oxford. The BM BS is used at Nottingham University, the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry (Exeter Medical School and Plymouth University's School of Medicine and Dentistry), the University of Southampton, and the Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
- BM was previously awarded at the University of Southampton. However, students starting after 2012 will be awarded BMBS. Although there is no degree of surgery officially awarded by Southampton, this degree is equivalent to MB ChB; students can pursue a career in surgery just like any other graduate in medicine and surgery.
- MB BChir provided by Cambridge University.
At Oxford and Cambridge universities, preclinical courses lead to an additional Bachelor of Arts (BA), degree (may be improved after three or four years for the Master of Arts), after which most ordinary students go elsewhere (but usually to one of London's educational hospitals) to complete clinical training. They can then take their new university degree: They used to have the option of returning to their old university for a clinical exam or attending one of the older non-university qualifying exams. Most students at Oxford and Cambridge are now in place to attend their clinical training.
The Conjoint Diploma LRCP MRCS LMSSA is a non-university qualification exam in medicine and surgery jointly administered by the Royal College of Physicians of London, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Society of Apothecaries through the United Examining Board from 1994 to 1999, when the General Medical Council revoked the permit. Prior to 1994, the English Conjoint Diploma from LRCP, MRCS was awarded for 110 years, and LMSSA were different and sometimes underappreciated qualifications. This diploma gradually became less popular among UK medical students, but more recently in 1938 only half of them qualified with a university degree. The diploma is taken largely by those who have qualified in medical field overseas.
Scotland
All medical schools in Scotland (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow) award the MB ChB .
The University of St Andrews School of Medicine awarded MB ChB until the early 1970s, but since the incorporation of its clinical medical school to the University of Dundee, St. Andrews now only pre-clinical BSc or BSc (Hons) , and students go to Mitra Medical School (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, or Manchester where they are awarded MB ChB after a further three years study).
The Scottish Triple Conjoint Diploma of LRCPE, LRCSE, LRCPSG (formerly LRCPE, LRCSE, LRFPSG) is a non-university qualification exam in medicine and surgery conferred jointly by the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, formerly through the Conjoint Council and from 1994 through the United Examining Board. This qualification can still be registered with GMC, but permission to award them was withdrawn by the United Kingdom Advisory Board in 1999.

Wisconsin
The Wisconsin Medical Society defends the use of an MD degree by a doctor who graduated with MBBS and is licensed to practice medicine in Wisconsin.
Vietnamese
There are many medical schools in Vietnam, such as Hanoi Medical University, Vietnam Traditional Medicine University, and Ortondo-Stomatology University. Most of them need six years to receive a Doctor of Medicine degree.
West Indies
All constituent countries from the University of the West Indies (UWI) are negotiating MB BS, due to UWI's historical affiliation to the University of London. The three physical campuses are Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, and Cave Hill in Barbados, with each campus having a Faculty of Medicine. The University of Guyana (UG) also grants "MB BS" to their medical school graduates. There are other medical schools in the West Indies, but this follows the North American system that leads to MD .
Zambia
All schools in Zambia are awarding MBChB:
Government sponsored medical school:

- Texila American University (TAU)
Zimbabwe
The University of Health Sciences University of Science awarded the MBChB degree, Midlands State University offers MBChB, while the National Science and Technology University awarded the MBBS.
Classification
Medical degree differs from other undergraduate degrees because they are a professional qualification that causes the holder to enter a specific career upon receipt. This is not the case with most other undergraduate degrees, so while Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery are scholars or scholars (depending on institution), they may be more appropriately conceptualized as the so-called first professional titles. Other professions whose qualifications follow the same pattern include:
- Chiropractic
- Dentistry
- Education
- Technique
- Environmental Health
- Occupational Therapy
- Optometry
- Pharmacy
- Physical Therapy
- Legal
- Veterinary Medicine
- Osteopathy
- Doctor Assistant
- Maintenance
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery is usually awarded as a general degree, not as an honorary degree, and thus graduates are not classified as for honors in other subjects. However, in many institutions (eg Aberdeen University, Birmingham University, Sheffield University, Liverpool University, Leicester University and Manchester University in England and Dundee University in Scotland) it is possible for degrees to be awarded with Honors (ie MB ChB (Hons.)) Or with a Commendation, if the board of examiners recognizes outstanding performance throughout the degree program. Very little of this is given.
More often, it is possible to study one subject for an extra year for an honors degree interspersed. These are usually Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Medical Sciences (BMedSci), Bachelor of Medical Biology (BMedBiol) or similar: at Oxford and Cambridge in England and Dublin in Ireland Bachelor of Arts degree awarded. In some universities, most medical students earn a regular degree in science as well: when the University of Edinburgh has a six-year program, the third year is followed by a regular BSc award (MedSci). In Australia, The University of Melbourne in Australia offers an Art Degree (BA) for medical students on completion of two extra years of undergraduate study, and Monash University offers a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree; if an optional Law degree is made, upon completion of their degree, the student may choose to undertake a one-year internship at the hospital and become a doctor, or spend a year doing an article to practice afterwards as a lawyer. At the University of Nottingham and the University of Southampton, both in the United Kingdom, all medical students on a five-year course receive a Bachelor of Medicine (BMedSci) degree without additional year interspersed. At Imperial College London and University College London, certain medical students can extend their intercalated years to an additional three years, thus temporarily exiting the MBBS course to complete a PhD. Upon completion of the PhD, students are required to sit the remaining 2 years of a medical course to receive his MBBS degree. University of the West Indies, Mona in Kingston, Jamaica automatically assigns a Bachelor of Medicine (BMedSci) degree to all students who have successfully completed their three-year MBBS program.
Progression
Medical school graduates are only entitled to the honorary title of "Doctor" after registration as a medical practitioner with relevant regulatory agencies in their respective countries. Medical graduates are eligible to take the graduate exam, including exams for membership and professional institutional associations. Among the latter are Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons, a postgraduate master's degree (such as Master of Surgery or Master of Medicine), and a postgraduate doctorate in medicine (such as Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Science, if obtained in Ireland, UK or Commonwealth, and board certification exams).
