SAT Subject Test in Chemistry

The SAT Subject Test in Chemistry is the one-hour, multiple-choice test assigned to chemistry by The College Board. A student choosing whether to take an exam depends on the college entrance requirement for the schools where the student plans to enroll. Until 1994, the SAT Subject Test is known as the Achievement Test ; until January 2005, they are known as SAT IIs ; they are still known by the last name.

Format

This test consists of 85 questions. The first 23 questions numbering 1-23 are 'classification questions'. The next 15 questions, number 101-115, are called 'relationship analysis questions'. The SAT Subject Subject in Chemistry is currently the only SAT that combines relationship analysis questions. The Relationship Analysis Question requires students to identify the truth value of the two statements. If both statements are true, the student will have to analyze the relationship between the two statements to see whether the second statement correctly explains the first statement. The last 47 questions totaling 24-70 are standard multiple choice questions. Metric Measurement Systems are used, rather than customary units of the United States. This is widely because students around the world follow the SAT Subject Test, not just Americans. In addition, many chemists and scientists use the Metric System, since the rest of the world uses it as well.

Scoring

The test has 85 multiple-choice questions, each consisting of five answer options, which must be answered within one hour. Students receive 1 point for each correct answer, lose Ã,¼ points for each wrong answer, and receive 0 points for questions left blank. This score is then converted to a 200-800 scale score. The average score for the 2009 test administration was 638, the standard deviation of 113. In 2011, the average score was 648 with a standard deviation of 110.

The College Board's recommended preparation is a one-year college preparation course in chemistry, a one-year course in algebra, and laboratory experience. However, some of the second year algebraic concepts (including logarithms) were tested on this subject test. Given the timing nature of the test, one of the key mathematics that emerges on SAT II in Chemistry is not the difficulty, but the speed at which it has to be solved. Furthermore, the often cited prerequisites of lab experience are sometimes unnecessary for the SAT Subject Test in Chemistry because of the nature of the question of experimentation; most lab concepts can only be memorized first. Some lab-based questions use diagrams, and thus it is helpful to know what kind of glasses are common and how different pieces are used.

Difficulty

Like most SAT tests, the SAT Chemical Test is relatively difficult. It tests the breadth of content that is very broad and expects students to formulate answers in a very short time. Many high school students find themselves taking additional resource materials, such as preparatory books and online tools, to help them prepare for the SAT Chemical test.

While the tests are challenging, there is a difference between the SAT Chemical Test and the AP Chemistry exam, which is a critical thinking exam used not for college admissions but for college placement. However, the AP course in Chemistry is adequate preparation for SAT Chemistry.

Resources

Students are not allowed to use notes, textbooks or calculators in this test. The only resource students can use is the periodic table provided with the test book. This table provides only atomic masses, atomic numbers, and symbols for each element.
