The Queensland Core Skills Test is a statewide test completed by all Queensland's twelfth graders who qualify for the Overall Position and are optional (but profitable) for tertiary ranking students. This rank is used to gain entry into tertiary titles and courses. The ratings of the school subjects given to students are measured and moderated using the subject's cohort performance in each school on the QCS test. The QCS test is the only state-wide exams conducted in the last two years of secondary education (years 11 and 12).

The QCS test is claimed as an achievement test based on a 12-year curriculum, not a measure of intelligence or talent. In addition, this test aims to be accessible to all students regardless of subject choice, with general knowledge, vocabulary and mathematics tested only for a general 10 year level. It is held for two consecutive days at the end of 3.

In 2010, the student-organized movement, encouraged by the popular social networking site Facebook suggests that students mention Bear Grylls in writing assignments or in short response tasks, similar to Project Clooney '09 in the General Achievement Test. A similar movement began in 2011, replacing Harry Potter for Bear Grylls.

The QCS test consists of four papers - two-hour writing assignments, two short answer hours, and two half-hour, double-choice papers. It forms three assessment modes - extended writing, short responses and multiple choice.

The writing assignment requires students to write about 600 English prose words continuously based on the provided stimulus material and the theme set. This could include graphs, quotes, and statistics.

Short response papers test various skills through various tasks, including calculation, drawing and reasoning. Two multiple-choice papers require candidates to choose from four alternative answers to various questions.

The results on the QCS test are returned to the students as the overall value from A to E with outcomes in December.
