Basic education in Wales has a structure similar to Primary School education in the UK, but Welsh language teaching is mandatory and is used as a teaching medium in many schools. The introduction of the Foundation Stage for children aged 3-7 years also creates an increasing distinction between Wales and England.

Stages
In 2001, the Welsh Assembly Government introduced the idea of ââa new curriculum for Wales.
In Wales, education by law begins in terms after the fifth birthday of the child, although many children start primary school earlier than this or their parents choose to educate them at home. Between the ages of 3 and 11 a child's education is divided into three main stages:
- Foundation phase - pre-compulsory education (ages 3-7) (replacing Early Years (ages 3-5) and Key Stage 1 (age 5-7).
- Main Stage 2 - the second phase of compulsory basic education (ages 7-11).
Primary schools in Wales must, by law, teach the basic curriculum and the National Curriculum. The basic curriculum consists of religious education (RE) and private and social education (PSE). Elementary schools are also required to have a policy on sex education. In the Key Stages 1 and 2, the National Curriculum consists of "core subjects" (English, Welsh, math and science) and non-core subjects - Welsh second language, design and technology, information technology, history, geography, art, music, physical education and religious education. There is no mandatory requirement for teaching English at Key Stage 1 at Welsh high schools.

Assessment
Students are legally assessed to establish their starting point when they first enter the school in the Year of Reception or Year 1, and there is further legal judgment in the core subjects at the end of Key Stages 1 and 2. The primary school table was removed in Wales in 2001; a Bristol University study indicates that this has led to a drop in standards in approximately 75% of schools.
Foundation Phase
From September 2008, the Welsh Assembly Government introduced a new Phase Phase for children from ages 3 to 7, combining Early Year Education for children aged 3 to 5 years. Phase 1 of the National Curriculum for ages 5 to 7 years. The Foundation Phase places greater emphasis on the learning experience.
