The Praxis test is one of a series of American teacher certification exams written and maintained by the Educational Testing Service. Praxis tests are usually required before, during, and after a teacher training course in the US.

To become a teacher in most states in the US, a Praxis exam is required. Usually consists of two separate tests, Praxis 1 and 2. In some states, alternative teacher certification programs allow prospective educators to obtain licenses without taking Praxis tests.

The Praxis I, or Pre-Professional Skills Test ( PPST ), consists of three exams: reading, writing, and math. On September 1, 2014, ETS redirected to Praxis "CASE" or "Core Academic Skills for Educators" which also consists of reading, writing, and math exams. This section can be taken as a combined test or separately. In most colleges and universities, graduation scores must be obtained for entry into teacher education. In many states, graduation scores must be obtained before a teacher's graduate can apply for a certificate or teaching certificate.

The Praxis II assessment covers many different areas. Each country requires a different combination of the Praxis II exam for certification. In many states, this includes content knowledge and pedagogy exams. In some states, students must pass this exam before being accepted into the student teaching component of the program. Many countries use the Praxis II test as a way to determine the status of highly qualified teachers under the No Child Left Behind Act. Specific exams School counseling Praxis II is used by some states as a license requirement for practicing professional school counseling.

It replaces the National Teacher Exam (NTE), also administered by ETS.
