Conversation Theory is a cybernetic and dialectical framework that offers a scientific theory to explain how interaction leads to "knowledge building," or "knowing": wants to maintain a dynamic/kinetic quality, and the need for it to exist " ". This work was proposed by Gordon Pask in the 1970s.

Conversational theory considers the social system as a symbolic, language-oriented system in which responses depend on one's interpretation of the behavior of others, and where meaning is agreed upon through conversation. But because the meanings are agreed upon, and they can be illusory and temporary, scientific research requires stable reference points in human transactions to enable reproducible results. Pask finds these points as an understanding that arises in the conversation between two participating individuals, and which he defines strictly.

Conversational theories illustrate the interaction between two or more cognitive systems, such as teachers and students or different perspectives within an individual, and how they engage in dialogue over the concepts provided and identify differences in how they perceive them.

The conversation theory comes out of Gordon Pask's work on instructional design and individual learning style models. In terms of learning styles, it identifies the conditions necessary to share concepts and describes the learning style holist , serialist , and the versatile optimal mix . He proposed a strict analogy model of connection.

Topic

The conversation theory as developed by Pask comes from this cybernetics framework and tries to explain the learning in both living organisms and machines. The basic idea of ​​this theory is that learning occurs through conversations about subject matter that serve to create explicit knowledge.

Conversation

Cognitive Reflector

From the conversational theory, Pask developed what he called "Cognitive Reflector". It is a virtual machine to select and implement the concept or topic of a registration mesh owned by at least a pair of participants. It features an external modeling facility where an agreement between, say, a teacher and student can be demonstrated by reproducing a general picture of behavior. We see this in essay and report writing or "practice" of science teaching.

Lp is a Pask protolanguage that produces operators like Ap simultaneously running Con , the Topics concept, T , to generate the Description, D . Thus:

A concise report from this operator is presented in Pask Among the many insights he points out that three indices are required for concurrent execution, two for parallel and one for pointing serial processes. He subsumes this complexity by designating participants A, B, etc.

In Comment towards the end of Pask, he states:

Learning strategy

To facilitate learning, Pask argued that the subject matter should be represented in the form of structures that show what to learn. These structures exist at different levels depending on the degree of relationship shown. The critical learning method according to Conversation Theory is a "teachback" in which one person teaches others what they have learned.

Pask identifies two different types of learning strategies:

  • Serialis - Go through the structure in sequence
  • Holist - Find a higher order relationship

Ideally a versatile student who is not a "world ball" or a serialist who knows little about the context of his work.
