The term "honorary title " (or "honorific title ") has various meanings in the context of different degrees and educational systems. Most commonly refers to variants of undergraduate degrees containing larger material volumes or higher study standards, or both, rather than "regular", "general" or "graduate" degrees. The degree of appreciation is sometimes indicated by " Hons " after degree degree, with various punctuation according to local custom, e.g. "BA (Hons)", "B.A., Hons", etc.

Examples of honors include an honors degree in the United States, a bachelor's degree with honors in England, Hong Kong and India, an honors degree in Ireland, an honors degree in Canada, and an honors degree in Australia. In South Africa an undergraduate honors degree is a postgraduate degree that follows from the completion of a bachelor's degree. A master's degree in master's art awarded by ancient Scottish universities in a place of art scholars may be awarded as honorary or non-honorary degrees; this at the same level as an equivalent degree. Many universities and colleges offer bachelor's and non-honors degrees. In most countries where honors are awarded, they imply a higher level of achievement than a non-honorary degree. Students who complete all the requirements for a non-honorary degree but do not receive enough rewards for a given honors degree will usually be awarded a non-honorary degree (also known as a "graduate", "general" or "regular" degree). In England, Northern Ireland and Wales, almost all degrees are awarded as honors; In contrast, honors are rarely given in the United States.

The current British university degree classification system, with its divisions into first, top and bottom classes, and third, was developed in 1918 to differentiate students based on their academic achievement. The concept of the title of "honor" goes back much further than this, however, with no test for an award in the original rules of the University of London in 1839, and Nevil Maskelyne was recorded taking a bachelor's degree with praise at Cambridge. in 1754. Other countries affected by this system include Australia, Brunei, Canada, New Zealand, Malta, Singapore, South Africa and Hong Kong.
