The Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering is a type of bachelor degree that is usually awarded after a four-year undergraduate course in biomedical engineering (BME). The degree itself is largely equivalent to a scholar of science and many institutions that give degrees in biomedical engineering and biotechnology do not add the field to the level itself. The course of study in BME is also very diverse since the field itself is relatively new and growing. In general, the undergraduate program at BME is likened to a cross between engineering and biological sciences with varying degrees of proportionality between the two.

Status profesional

Engineers typically require this type of professional certification, such as meeting certain educational requirements and passing exams to become professional engineers. These certifications are usually nationally regulated and registered, but there are also cases where self-regulatory bodies, such as the Canadian Professional Engineer Association. In many cases, carrying the title of "Professional Engineer" is legally protected.

Because BME is a emerging field, professional certification is not uniform and uniform as it is for other engineering fields. For example, the US Basics Engineering exam does not include the biomedical engineering section, although it includes biology. Biomedical engineers often only have a bachelor's degree as their qualification. However, some countries do organize biomedical engineers, such as Australia, but enrollment is usually recommended, but not necessarily a requirement.

Like many engineering fields, bachelor degrees are usually the minimum degree and are often the most common for a profession in BME, although it is not uncommon for a bachelor's degree to be a pioneer in postgraduate studies. ABET accredits the undergraduate program in its field. However, even this is not a strict requirement as this is a newly emerging field and due to the young age of many programs.

Curriculum

The curriculum for the BME program varies significantly from institution to institution and often in one program. In general, the basic engineering curriculum, including mathematics through differential equations, statistics, and basic understanding of biology and other basic sciences is the excellence of the BME program.

Many BME programs have a series of tracks that focus on specific areas of study within BME. Often, the track also coincides with a particular field of engineering or science. Examples of tracks include:

  • Biomechanics: The focus includes medical devices, modeling biological systems, and organism mechanisms. This pathway deals with mechanical engineering and often physiology.
  • Bioinstrumentation/Bioelectrical Systems: Focus includes medical devices, modeling biological systems, especially circuit analogy to the nervous system, bioelectric phenomena and signal processing. This line is related to electrical engineering.
  • Cells, Networks and Biomolecular Engineering: These pathways are often quite diverse, with a focus ranging from artificial tissue, biological system modeling, drug delivery, genetic engineering, biochemical engineering and protein production. This pathway can interact with chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, molecular biology, physiology, genetics, materials science, and other fields.
  • Medical Optics: Focus on medical diagnostics and medical optical technology. This line connects with optics, physics, and electrical engineering.

Many other tracks may be present in certain programs as well as multiple track combinations.

Another common feature of many BME programs is the capstone design project in which students become involved in technology research and development in the field. In some schools, this culminated in the creation of medical devices and prototypes. The capstone design project also often includes exposure problems such as funding, regulatory issues and other topics related to careers in the field.

Research and Industry Experience

An important feature of many programs is the inclusion of research and/or industry experience in either the curricular or extracurricular work done by the students. Because BME careers often focus on research or industrial field applications, many programs have looked good to encourage or sometimes require experience beyond the requirements of curricular standards. Many research universities offer opportunities for students to participate in faculty research at the undergraduate level. Other schools have industrial labs or co-ops to provide students relevant work experience before graduation.

Students who participate in either research or industry during the course of study often see an advantage when they enter the job market, as many entrepreneurs prefer experienced candidates or offer higher salaries to those who have previous experience. Also, research or industry experience is often a factor in graduate school admissions.

Value of degree

Recently, many universities, such as Case Western Reserve University have implemented new initiatives to create or expand undergraduate programs at BME. This is partly due to increased demand in the biotechnology sector and increased interest in biological research. The degree in BME directly identifies a candidate having training in both traditional engineering and biological sciences, which has become an increasingly desirable qualification as a biological aspect that permeates into other industries.

Because BME is a diverse field, many programs have a broad curriculum with students typically choosing to specialize in certain aspects of BME. However, due to its diversity, some degree holders may find their education insufficient in profound emphasis, which may encourage further study at graduate school or by learning through experience.

Many undergraduate BME program rankings exist on a very varying basis for each rank. As with many degrees, the reputation of the program can be a factor desired by the degree holder either for work or postgraduate admissions. The reputation of many undergraduate degrees is also related to institutional graduates or research programs, which have more tangible factors for assessment, such as funding and research volumes, publications and citations.
