Good Difficult Men Find and Other Stories (published in the UK as The Artificial Nigger and Other Stories ) is a collection of stories short by American author Flannery O'Connor. This collection was first published in 1955. Short story subjects range from baptism ("River") to serial killers ("Good Difficult Men") to human greed and exploitation ("Life You Save Might You"). The majority of the stories include stirring violent scenes that make the character experience spiritual change. The stories usually have catholic tones associated with life and death scenarios. For example, in the story of "Good People Hard to Find", the criminals state, "She would be a good woman if someone there shoots her every minute of her life."

Title

The title of O'Connor's story is taken from a blues song, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", written by Eddie Green and popularized by singer Bessie Smith in 1927.

Adaptations

A television adaptation of the short story "The Life You Save May Be Your Own", starring Gene Kelly, was broadcast on the CBS Schlitz Playhouse network on February 1, 1957. O'Connor was unhappy with the results, as evidenced in a letter to a friend: "The best I can say for that is that it could possibly get worse.

A short film adaptation of the story "A Good Man Is Hard Find", titled "Black Hearts Bleed Red", was released in 1993. The film was directed by New York filmmaker Jeri Cain Rossi and stars noted New York artist Joe Coleman.

Musician Sufjan Stevens wrote a song titled "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" on his album Seven Swans ; he is told from a Misfit point of view even though he is not the focus of his story.

In May 2017, directors John McNaughton and Michael Rooker will make feature film adaptations.
