Ringkasan plot
The main character is a hundred-year-old woman, Roseanne McNulty, who now lives at Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital. After being a patient for about fifty years or so, Roseanne decided to write an autobiography. He calls it "Roseanne's own testimony" and charts his life and the lives of his parents, who lived in Sligo at the turn of the 20th century. He kept his story hidden under a loose floorboards in his room, not sure if he wanted it found. The second narrative is a "regular book" from the head of a psychiatrist at the hospital today, Dr. Grene. The hospital is now facing an imminent demolition. He must decide who his patient is to be moved, and who should be released to the community. She was very concerned about Roseanne, and began hesitating to try to find her history. It soon became clear that both Roseanne and Dr Grene had different stories about his imprisonment and his early life, but what was consistent in both narrations was that Roseanne became a victim of religious and political upheaval in Ireland in the 1920s and 1930s.

Inspiration
The novel was inspired by the story told to her by her mother from an elderly relative - "We were driving through Sligo, and my mother showed me a cabin and told me that was where my great-uncle's first wife lived before being put into a mental hospital by the family He knows nothing else except that he is beautiful I've heard my grandfather say that he is not good That's what survives and rumors about his beauty He's not named, helpless, unknown I feel I'm almost tied duty as a novelist to reclaim him and, indeed, re-create him. " This story also relates to previous novels by Barry, especially the Existence of Eneas Mcnulty, the title character of a brother-in- to Roseanne McNulty.
Awards
It won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, one of Britain's most prestigious literary prizes and the oldest prize in Britain.
This novel won the Book of the Year at the 2008 Costa Awards. This is despite the jury's misgivings, one of which, Matthew Parris said: "They agree that it is flawed, and almost no one likes the ending, which is almost fatal to its success"

It was chosen for Man Booker Prize for Fiction, narrowly lost to The White Tiger
