NETRA is a mobile eye diagnostic tool developed at MIT Media Lab consisting of eyepiece lenses and software applications for smartphones. Co-inventors include Ramesh Raskar and Vitor Pamplona. This can be seen as the opposite of expensive Shack-Hartmann sensors. NETRA allows for early diagnosis, low cost of the most common Refractive Disorders. The subject looks at the device and aligns the pattern on the screen. By repeating this procedure for eight meridians, the required refractive correction is calculated. NETRA exploits the fact that deviations are expressed using only a few parameters (Spherical, Cylindrical and Axis of Astigmatism) to create an easier user interaction approach. Utilizing cellular connectivity, the system may transmit test data to the appropriate facility for immediate action, aggregate data for use in analysis, or instruct a separate machine for automatic ejection removal.
A key factor that allows for this new technology is the modern LCD resolution. The available resolution is now half the width of a human hair. This is only one-third of the working resolution of high-end ophthalmology instruments. At this level, the LCDs available on modern mobile phones can be redesigned to achieve performance comparable to the highest scientific instruments.
NETRA can be considered a thermometer for visual performance. Just as a thermometer measures the body temperature at one's convenience, this device provides a quantitative measurement of biased error without the need of a doctor on the ground. Tests can be done anywhere, allowing people to know when they need to see a doctor. The need for affordable and affordable eye diagnostics such as NETRA is remarkable and global - more than half a billion people have unrepaired refractive errors.
