University

Open University of Mauritius

The Open University of Mauritius (OU) was established on July 12, 2012 according to the Open University of Mauritius ACT 2010. The OU provides education to learners who want to study full time and for those who can not physically attend on campus. With flexible study options, learners can learn from home, work, or anywhere in the world. The Mauritius College of the Air, established in 1971, has been integrated with the Open University of Mauritius in July 2012. OU is a member of the Commonwealth University Association, the International Council for Open and Distance Education, and the African Council for Distance Education.

Working closely with other universities offers courses in both open/distance/blended and full-time learning modes. There are three campuses in Mauritius and one in Rodrigues.

Distance learners watch or listen to the materials provided, work on course activities and tasks with support from tutors who are emails. Tutorials are organized but they are mostly optional and provide an opportunity to meet with tutors and fellow learners. Through virtual classrooms, international students participate in interactive sessions conducted by their speakers. It also offers short courses that help improve job skills.

OU offers qualifications ranging from short course work, B.Sc./B.Ed., M.Sc./M.Ed./M.A, MBA to DBA/Ph.D. for areas including Management, Business Administration, Human Resource Management/Development, Education, Finance, Accounting, Taxation, Law, Graphic Design, Journalism, Multimedia, Audio-visual Production, Translation Studies, Mathematics, Logistics, Transportation, French and English.

OU conducts corporate training for private and public institutions. Employees are empowered through sustainable professional development courses.

Greenwich University Pakistan, Mauritius Campus Branch

The Campus Branch of Mauritius at Greenwich University (Pakistan) is located at 51, Ebene, Cybercity, Mauritius and is fully accredited by the Mauritius Tertiary Education Commission, offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in Business Administration. The college is also approved by the Mauritius Qualification Authority (MQA).

Greenwich University has been investing in quality higher education in Pakistan for the last 30 years. The university is recognized by the Pakistan Higher Education Commission (HEC) and is among the top 10 Pakistani Business Schools. Greenwich University has campuses in the Republic of Mauritius, recognized by the Mauritius Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), and by Mauritius Qualification Authority, Mauritius. Making it the only university from Pakistan that has an international campus recognized by the accreditation body.

Greenwich University, inaugurated by the Government of Pakistan Sindh (PAS/Legis-B-22/97 on 3 February 1998) as a University Degree and recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and ranked among the Top 10 Best Business Schools of Pakistan.

Campus Aberystwyth University Mauritius Branch

The university is developing a campus in Quartier Militaire, which is in the final stages of construction. The new Ste will be subject to TEC approval.

Aberystwyth University (Mauritius Branch Campus) is registered with TEC to operate from the Ebene Cybercity campus.

All courses, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, are accredited by the UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education.

Aberystwyth University, founded in 1872, was the first university in Wales. It was the first in the UK to award a degree to women and open the first woman's entrance hall in England in 1885. It is the first university in Wales to offer courses in various disciplines including computing, law, media and film, geography and in geography. The world's first International Political Department was founded by the University of Aberystwyth.

The University of Mauritius

Starting from the College of Agriculture, the University of Mauritius, founded in 1965, dominates the Tertiary Education Sector locally. Initially, it had three Schools, namely Agriculture, Industrial Administration and Technology. Since then developed into five faculties, namely Agriculture, Engineering, Law and Management, Science, and Social Sciences & amp; Literature.

It has a Center for Research and Medical Studies and hosted SSR Medical College (Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Medical College). It has the Center for Distance Education, the Center for Technology and Information Systems, and the Consultation Center.

UoM is growing, with student growth rate around 10% per year. The program has changed steadily from the certificate/diploma level to undergraduate and master's taught programs, as well as postgraduate research.

Technology University, Mauritius

The Law of the University of Technology, Mauritius (UTM) was announced in May 2000 and began operations in September 2000. UTM has three schools: the School of Informatics and Software Engineering, the School of Public Sector Policy and Management, and the School of Sustainable Development.

Other institutions

Mauritius Institute of Education

Established in 1973, MIE was charged with teacher education, research in curriculum education and development. The role of MIE as a curriculum development center has been gradual so it is now largely involved in teacher training and educational research. However, it continues to play a role in curriculum planning and development so that MIE has been entrusted with responsibility for Curriculum Development since October 2010.

There are five schools in MIE: Applied Sciences, Education, Science and Mathematics, Arts and Humanities and Open and Distance Learning Centers.

It offers training for school teachers from elementary, primary and secondary schools, as well as managerial cadres in programs ranging from Certificates, Diplomas, Graduate Certificates in Education and Post-Graduate Diploma. It offers B.Ed as well as a Master's program in Education, in collaboration with the University of Mauritius and the University of Brighton, UK respectively. It offers Doctorate programs in association with the University of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa and the University of Brighton, UK.

The MIE, through the Center for Open & amp; Distance Learning, involved in the Sankore Project to digitize curriculum materials for primary and secondary schools, and introduction of interactive whiteboard technology in schools.

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute

MGI was founded in 1970 as a government with Mauritius and the Indian government to promote education and culture, with an emphasis on Indian culture and tradition. It runs, in tertiary set-up, courses in Indian Studies, Performing Arts, Fine Arts, Chinese Studies and Mauritian.

MGI has three main schools operating at tertiary level: the Indian School of Study, the School of Music and Fine Arts, and the School of Mauritian and Territory Studies. It also runs diploma and certificate level programs, undergraduate programs in Language, Art and Performing Arts, in collaboration with UoM. Gandhi Primary and Secondary Schools operate within the scope of MGI.

Mauritius College of the Air

MCA was founded in 1971 to promote education, arts and science and culture in Mauritius through mass media. When the MCA law was reinstated in 1985, distance education was maintained as the primary strategy to meet these goals. Joining the Audio-Visual Center of the Ministry of Education and Science in 1986, the MCA to date has primarily served the primary and secondary education sector through the production of educational programs to be broadcast on radio and television. MCA has also produced educational materials for non-formal or continuing education, for non-broadcast use. Since the beginning of 1995, it has been involved in tertiary level program spending in cooperation with foreign institutions through distance mode.

The MCA is being configured as a Mauritius Open University.

Rabindranath Tagore Institute

Formed in December 2002, Rabindranath Tagore Institute has a cultural call and operates under the umbrella of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute. This is still in the early stages of development.

The Polytechnics

Two polytechnic institutions exist in this country.

  • The Swami Dayanand Institute of Management runs a Diploma Program in Information Technology, Administration and Accounting; such diploma programs were previously provided by UoM.
  • The Institut SupÃÆ'Â © rieur de TÃÆ' Â © chnologie offers diploma level programs (BrevÃÆ'Â © t de TÃÆ' Â © chnicien SupÃÆ' Â © rieur) in Electro-Technics, Mecatronics and Building Engineering. All programs are run on a full-time basis.

TSMTF was created in 1990 to manage the Polytechnic. It is administered by the Council. The Industrial Advisory Committee, which consists of representatives from the public and private sectors, is appointed in connection with the program. The functions of the committee are to:

  • set program goals, curriculum content and delivery modes;
  • establishing terminal standards and certifications;
  • prescribe training equipment, hardware and software;
  • prescribe training and environmental facilities;
  • advise on industrial training attachments;
  • reviewing program results and job performance of diploma holders;
  • monitor and review market demand;
  • review and upgrade the program.

Mauritius Institute of Training and Development (Ex: IVTB)

IVTB was established in 1988 to promote vocational education and training with the goal of providing manpower for industry, service and domestic sectors. Most of the programs are vocational that lead to National Trade Certification (levels 3 and 2). Since 1998, IVTB has embarked on a tertiary level program at certificate and diploma levels in areas including Hotel Management, Automation, and Information Technology.

Since 2004, IVTB has introduced the National Trade Certification Foundation Course for students who have completed their Prevocation Education Level. 3. This course teaches Work.

IVTB also introduced other courses such as IC3 for students from National Trade Certificate Level 2 and 3.

Mauritius Institute of Health

MIH was established in 1989 to meet the training needs of health, local and regional professionals. It organizes courses and programs, mostly from short duration to medical and para-medical personnel.

Private institutions/distance education

Private institutions and organizations, numbering over 35, offer courses in Management, Accounting and Information Technology. Most of these private institutions are local partners of overseas institutions and offer courses ranging from sub-graduate to graduate programs through a mixed-mode system, which includes distance learning and face-to-face tutorials. Most of the checks are conducted by Mauritius Examinations Syndicate (MES) and some are organized and infiltrated by foreign institutions themselves in partnership with local partners. Major players include Charles Telfair Institute, MALEM, Mauritius Employers Federation and Mauritius Chamber of Commerce & amp; Industry.

Indian Ocean University

UIO, established in January 1998 under the auspices of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), is a network of tertiary education and research institutions from the five member countries, namely the Comores, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion, and Seychelles. It offers tertiary level programs of regional calls in five member countries. During the three-year trial phase, the UIO secretariat is based in Reunion. In line with a recent decision, the chair of the UIO will be rotating among member states.

Institut de la Francophonie pour L'Entrepreneuriat

IFE began operations in 1999, in the context of an agreement signed between the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research and the "Association des Università ©  © Partiellement ou EntiÃÆ'¨rement de Langue FranÃÆ'§aise et L'UniversitÃÆ'  © des RÃÆ'  © seaux d 'ExprÃÆ'  © ssion FranÃÆ'§aise ". It offers Master's and Doctoral programs and conducts research in the field of entrepreneurship and related fields with regional calls.

Sir Seewosagur Ramgoolam Medical College [SSR] Medical College

SSRMC was created in 1999 and affiliated with the University of Mauritius. It is located in Belle Rive near the town of Curepipe. It serves local and overseas students, from India, South Africa, Malaysia, the Gulf and other Indian Ocean shipping nations. A report from the international monitoring committee highlighted that the teaching spaces in the medical faculty were inadequate and inadequate for clinical teaching.

A five-year degree costs US $ 50,000. Approximately 20% of seats are allocated to local students on the 5-year MBBS program divided into ten semesters each 6 months and the four-year BDS program is followed by a one-year compulsory internship. The college offers the MD/MS postgraduate program in five specializations Medicine, Surgery, Radio diagnosis, Anesthesiology, and Ophthalmology. Minimum entry requirements are completion of Cambridge SC and Cambridge HSC exams, with minimum AAB requirements at HSC level. The MBBS degree from SSR is recognized by the California medical board, IMED/ECFMG USA and by the World Health Organization.

Indian Ocean Dental School and Hospital

School of Dentistry and Hospital of the Indian Ocean, managed by R.F. Gandhi A.K. Trust Limited, started in 2003. Affiliated with Bhavnagar University, Gujarat, India.

The Institute is the premier provider of dental education in the region, providing BDS programs. The duration of the program is 4 years plus 1 year of internship. More details can be accessed from www.iodsh.com
