Sport Pedagogy is a field of academic study, located at the crossroads between sports and education. As a discipline, sports pedagogy deals with learning, teaching, and instruction in sports, physical education and related physical activity areas. While sports pedagogy is largely regarded as a sub-discipline of sports (in North America often referred to as kinesiology), its theoretical foundation is also supported by the science of general education. Because of this, the pedagogy of the sport of scientific subdisciplines is therefore allied with both fields, sports science and education.

Etymology and Context

In the original sense of the word pedagogy, and therefore also the pedagogy of sport, is concerned with the development of the goals of children and young people. The word pedagogy comes from the Greek language (pais = 'son', agogein = 'lead', 'instruct' and implies an art that aims to lead, educate, or teach young people.) Recognizing the fact that humans are lifelong learners and also potentially involved in lifetime physical activity, the current definition of sports pedagogy supports a broader view of the context in which sports pedagogy resides. To reflect this, the term sports pedagogy is used more holistically to include pedagogy-related learning and adult participation in sports and physical activity at all age ranges.

Historically, the roots of sports pedagogy as an academic subdiscipline of sports science can be traced back to the systematic study of physical education as a subject. As a pedagogical sports discipline was first explicitly recognized during the late 1960s in continental Europe, where the discipline was seen to provide a theoretical framework for the planning and teaching of physical education in schools. In Germany for example, the publication of the influential book Ommo Grupe 'Grundlagen der SportpÃÆ'¤dagogik' (Pedagogical Sport Foundation) provides an important moment in defining the concept and content of sports pedagogy as an academic subject. It also provides an impetus for further research in this field and in the late 1970s, the position of professor in sports pedagogy has been established within the sports and sports science department throughout the German University.

In the English-speaking world, the recognition of sports pedagogy as a newer discipline. In 1989, the famous German researcher Herbert Haag observed that the meaning of the term 'sports pedagogy' has not been fully established in the English sports science literature. Nevertheless, Haag affirms the prosperity and usefulness of the term 'pedagogy sport' to communicate about research in learning and teaching in physical education and sports for international academic audiences in this field. The use of the relatively late term "sports anagogy" in the English academic literature was also observed by leading Australian researcher Richard Tinning (2008, p.405) noting that despite the fact that our European counterparts have used the term pedagogy and sports pedagogy over the years, the world of English-language kinesiology has just recently accepted the requirements. 'Nevertheless, Tinning observes that sports pedagogy is now' steady as a credible academic subdiscipline '.

Sport pedagogy as a discipline and as a field of study

While research in sports pedagogy and research in the field of physical education continues to overlap, sports pedagogy now looks to be a thorough academic discipline, informing learning, teaching and instruction in various sports, physical activities and exercise contexts. At the center of the investigation is a pedagogical meeting between teachers/trainers/instructors and learners/participants. In this case, this is the goal of the sports pedagogy 'to support the learners' needs in sports, and other forms of physical activity, anywhere and anytime they seek to learn by way of life'. To achieve this goal, sports pedagogy researchers should be encouraged to engage in interdisciplinary work, to go beyond the individual academic silos that sometimes exist between different sub-disciplines in sports science.
