Design and technology ( D & amp; T ) is a curriculum designed to produce literacy in design and related technologies. It is offered as a school subject at all high school levels in the UK and is part of the National Curriculum of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is offered in many countries around the world such as Malaysia, Brunei, Bermuda, Singapore, India, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Malta, Hong Kong, Jordan, Lesotho, and Botswana. Many international schools have courses in design and technology. As a school subject, it involves students in designing in a practical context with a focus on, for example, food, textiles, resistant materials or digital media. It is also a university program in many countries, including Australia, Canada, USA, Singapore, South Africa, the Netherlands and New Zealand, both for teacher preparation and for general education in areas such as industrial design. Some universities in England that organize the course include: Brighton, Sheffield Hallam, Goldsmiths' College, and Greenwich.

IGCSE

At the IGCSE level, a two-year course requires all students to produce one part of the course, which should consist of products that have been created by students in the workshop plus a folder including research and analysis of the issues being solved. It should also include specifications based on research and analysis which in turn should inform sketching or modeling ideas. When these ideas are developed into workable solutions, students are asked to evaluate them as they evolve. As well as detailed plans of the manufacturing process to be undertaken in the manufacture of product prototype products should take into account the various industry practices that are necessary if the product is to be commercially produced. After completing the course, the teacher rewards the completion of the final product, creativity, complexity, and how well the project itself is made.

  • (AQA) 40% of the final mark is given for the course and 60% for examination of common knowledge in the subject. Of the 40% 20% courses are based on manufacture and 20% of design work. There is a similar cleavage in 40% inspection where 40% is based on manufacture and 60% is based on design.
  • (Edexcel) 60% courses. 40% examination of general knowledge in the subject (materials, processes, techniques and sustainability etc.). Courses are shared 50% of research and analysis (Design Activity), and 50% actually create items (Activity).

Level

Level A and US examinations prepare students for individual learning and problem solving, which is important in business and industry. Time management is a key factor in successful candidates in the qualifying course elements. The exam is as strict as any other subject. Indeed, due to the complexity and variety of tasks and organizational skills this exam is required and certainly very demanding. This subject includes activities from control technology to aesthetic product design. Students must use all types of computer software including computer-aided design and manufacture, spreadsheets, and computer presentations. Outputs from such jobs are often sent to CNC machines for manufacture.

International Baccalaureate

IB Design Technology (DT) is the elective subject offered at many global International Baccalaureate schools. Design is also offered in the Mid Year IB Program as a compulsory subject for grades 6-10, and at the Diploma Program level (level 11-12). IB Design Technology is very similar in content to Technology Design , which is widely offered in the UK national curriculum, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many African countries. This is one of a group of 4 sciences.

The main focus of the MYP Design is to give students an understanding of the design cycle, through a practical program. Students will complete the project based on real and authentic problem solving. Students record their progress as they follow the design cycle to achieve a viable solution. They create solutions and then evaluate them after thorough testing.

The Design Technology Diploma program is a two-year introduction to designing, a variety of technological foundations, and global technology issues. It provides students with the knowledge to be able to design and create in school workshops, as well as to develop information literacy on technology in general. Because it is an international curriculum, it has a special focus on global environmental issues. It covers core topics in human factors and ergonomics, resource management and sustainable production, modeling, raw materials to final production, innovation and design, classical design. It covers higher-level topics in user-centered design, sustainability, innovation and markets, as well as commercial production. The Diploma is accepted for university admission in many countries, and is a good preparation for careers in such fields as engineering, architecture, product design, interior design, design and education.

Awards

In the UK, the Arkwright Scholarships Trust provides a two-year scholarship to students who take GCSE/Scottish Standard Grade in design & amp; technology. The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships support students through their A/Scottish Highers level and encourage them to study engineering or related design fields at top universities or through high-quality industry internships.
